Before it was taken on by POABS in 1989, the Seethargundu estate had previously been derelict for 16 years. This neglect ironically formed the perfect base for organic farming and the sensitive reactivation of the farm. Since 1989 all practices on the farm have been carried out organically and since 2000 the estate has also adopted a biodynamic regime. Biodynamic agriculture is a ‘whole farm’ approach which aims to manage individual components on a farm so that they support and strengthen each other with the aim of creating a self-sustaining ecosystem. For example all waste products are used to create compost and the farm also produces all its own seeds and livestock. Biodynamic composting is practiced using cow horn manure which can renew degraded soils and promote soil fertility.
The coffee is planted under a double canopy of shade, resulting in an incredible habitat for birdlife. Estate workers benefit from access to a primary school for their children and there is a bus to take older students to the nearby secondary school. There are also loans provided to deserving students for higher education as well as a fully stocked medical dispensary.
