We have selected 2 very special Kenyan coffees with very different taste characteristics. Both coffees are from the same region and have gone through a fully washed process. The main difference comes from the size grades. Karatina is a peaberry (PB) and Thiriku is an (AB). We find tasting these coffees side by side a very interesting experience.

Karatina PB: Plum jam and cherry aroma. Complex spices and blackcurrant notes. Bright citrus acidity.
Thiriku AB: Blueberry and jasmine aroma. Juicy redcurrants and molasses. Soft and balanced acidity.

A peaberry (PB) is the result of only one seed forming inside the coffee cherry rather than the usual two. They are considered to have a greater intensity of flavour and in this case lots of sweetness and brighter acidity.

The (AB) refers to a slightly larger size bean than the (PB) and grows with the usual 2 seeds inside the cherry. We found in this particular coffee more floral attributes and a lower acidity than a typical Kenyan.
